Aiolia (old name designating AEOLIAN ISLANDS - Italian ISOLE EOLIE, Latin INSULAE AEOLIAE, also called LIPARI ISLANDS - , volcanic group in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily, Italy. Their volcanic activity has been known since ancient times, and the Greeks believed the islands to be encircled by the indestructible bronze walls, and the home of Aeolus, king of the winds, whence their name) Leo Golden Saint and guardian of the 5th House in Sanctuary, is the younger brother of the Golden Sagittarius Saint, Aiolos.
During the series, we got to know how Aiolia had been trained by his older brother, who was very close to him. When Aiolos was declared a traitor who kidnapped and killed little Athena, his younger brother was also persecuted and ignored in Sanctuary. As a result, he's become a loner who has spent the next years in self-merciless training, with one and single goal - to become the strongest Saint and to erase the spot his brother had left on their family name. And really, he went directly from being a trainee to Gold Saint.

In the anime, we first met Aiolia during Shaina's and Marin's confrontation. He interfered and saved Marin from being beaten to a pulp. Gentleness he's shown toward her, clearly revealed some deeper sentiments between him and Seiya's sensai. It was also where we saw that Aiolia didn't like at all what the Master he had sworn to serve, was doing. When Marin expressed concern for him compromising himself in the Pope's eyes by helping her, he replied by openly cursing the Pope ! Still, without Athena, there was no other he would acknowledge as a leader, so he followed Pope's orders, without asking questions. He even offered himself to, instead of Scorpio Milo, personally recover the Sagittarius Cloth and punish the rebellious bronze Saints , seeing that as a chance to redeem his family name.
But, when the time came for him to face Seiya, he found himself reluctant to give a final blow to the Marin's pupil. When Shaina throw herself to accept Leo's blow instead of Seiya, Aiolia, feeling compunction for not having aborted the blow in time, decided to postpone his mission and bring her back to Sanctuary where she could be healed.

When three more Silver Saints arrived, telling Leo that they were sent by Pope to see that he finished his mission. Aiolia got angered, but was only standing by with Shaina in his arms, as they attacked Seiya. To his surprise, they were all blown away by the tremendous power discharge as the Sagittarius Cloth, that had suddenly appeared, snapped into place around Seiya who became Sagittarius. Now Leo had to act, even if he really didn't want to. They clashed, none of them successful, when Saori arrived. Aiolia was shaken by the turn of the events, but still insisted she was an imposter. Athena then told him how his older brother Sagittarius Aiolos had saved her live when the Pope had been about to kill her. Aiolos had intervened, stopped the knife aimed at her, took off the Pope's mask and discovered his true identity, the one of someone trusted in Sanctuary. The Pope had then responded by attacking Aiolos and sending another Golden Saint to finish him off. Fatally wounded, Sagittarius however had managed to escape with both Saori and his Cloth, and to get her to safety.

Aiolia still didn't believe her, but when he saw his brother's spirit who scolded him for not realizing and recognizing the truth, he finally accepted that Saori was indeed Athena and kneeled before her, pledging his service to her. He then picked up Ophuichus Shaina and returned them to Sanctuary.
After leaving Shaina to Cassios' care, he furiously went to confront the Master, but ended up fighting Virgo Shaka instead, who stood up in Pope's defense. Master used a chance when both the fighters were knocked down, to posses Leo Aiolia, burning his mind with diabolic ray.

When Seiya came to the 5th house that Leo guarded, instead of an ally, he found a brainwashed assassin who would have killed him, hadn't Cassios sacrificed himself for Shaina's sake, knowing that she loved Seiya. With Cassios' death, the spell over Aiolia was broken, so he healed badly wounded Seiya and forwarded him to the 6th house.
He then took Cassios' burial on himself, as well as telling Shaina the unpleasant news. He told her how Cassios had died and that his last thoughts had been of her. She got desperate over her pupil's death and determined to go and take on the Pope herself, despite Aiolia's protests, blaming herself for Cassios' death. The only way Leo found to stop her, was to knock her out again. As he buried Cassios, he promised the dead man's spirit that he would take care of Shaina for him.

Leo Aiolia is noble and honest to a fault, a fact that drives him into confronting the Pope long before there was anyone to back him up...which certainly took the Lion's legendary courage. The fact that in his scenario Kurumada made Aiolia as a man blinded by the rage that his superior tyrant inflicted upon him, by analogy to the animal which is guarding the eponymous temple, reveals the author's intention to especially value the wild aspect and the killing instinct of the said animal. This is completely understandable and firmly justified.

Generally speaking, Lion is an animal which is very often used in various myths and legends, either in the total morphology, or partially. Therefore, there are many coats of arms and flags from various countries, bearing this animal.

The Constellation of Leo represents Nemean (or Cleonian) lion. According to some sources, this lion was a descendant of the two-headed Dog Ortros (Kerber's brother) and terrible Echidna (huge snake with one or more human heads). According to others, it was Selena (the Goddess of Moon ) who created this lion by Hera's wish, out of the sea foam closed in a spacious coffin. Irida (the messenger of Gods), then brought it to the Nemean Mountains, and the beast settled down in the gorge between Cleon and Nemea, in the lion's cave with two entries, two miles away from the city of Nemea. Nemean Lion was the huge beast with a skin that couldn't be breached neither by iron, nor by bronze, nor by stone. However, Heracles killed this lion, in the first of his famous 12 Labors. When Heracles saw that the beast was invulnerable to his weapons, he managed to drive the lion into the cave, whose one entry he previously enclosed, and to strangle it while they were wrestling.

Aiolia's attacks are Lighting Plasma and Lighting Bolt. The sign of Leo, being the most subordinate of all signs to the influence of the Sun, and announcing the Summer and Sun's reaching its Zenith, is thus comprehensively and evidently related to the light and power (obviously, the expression 'Plasma' means the physics version of the very incendiary gaseous formation, and not the physical fluid) .
